Chris Hundemer, PG, CEG, CHG, Senior Geologist at Treadwell & Rollo, recently attended the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Association of Engineering Geologists in South Lake Tahoe. Chris presented a case study showcasing the methods and findings of a fault investigation performed last year for a site in Los Gatos underlain by the Shannon Fault.
The site is underlain by up to about 75 feet of alluvium over Monterey Formation bedrock. To investigate the fault, deep borings were drilled into the bedrock at regular intervals and a fault trench was excavated to about 12 feet deep over the suspected trace. The investigation was the first to contain radio-carbon dating of alluvial layers overlying the fault, and it was concluded that this splay of the fault has not been active during the past 11,000 years.
Chris also presented a poster showing the methods and conclusions of a landslide investigation performed last year on the eastern flank of San Bruno Mountain in Brisbane. The site is impacted by landslides up to about 38 feet in depth, which was determined by down-hole logging hand-dug shafts at 7 locations on the site to a maximum depth of 43 feet.
